What is the most suitable ballast water management system for your ship design? What is the best bay to control and combat hull fouling? The expert team of Marine Eco Analytics (MEA-nl) can support you with advise about the right technology. Also, we can carry out research which enables you to prove that the chosen technology complies with the global and national regulations.
The spread of invasive organisms by shipping is a growing problem area. Both in terms of policy makers’ concern and an increasing rate of public attention. Most likely, ballast water requirements stemming from the Ballast Water Convention of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) will enter into force soon. The requirements of the Convention will be compulsory for any new built ship world-wide.
Consequently, the question which ballast water management systems and/or anti-hull fouling technology is most suitable for your specific ship or fleet, is an urgent one.
To answer this question, a broad, multi-discipline based knowledge and expertise of (marine) biology and shipping is required. At MEA-nl, we have such know-how and knowledge available. This makes us a very professional partner in any subject area related to ballast water management, hull fouling and water cleaning technologies.
As an advisor, MEA-nl we provide assistance to:
MEA-nl is your partner in the R&D phase of your ballast water treatment method and management system. We do not just test your technology or system: as independent test facility (link naar MEA Innovator page) we are able to support you at any improvement stage of your system. This is necessary, because your manufactured or chosen system must have a proven performance under any given circumstance. We operate from our own unique test facility (link naar facility en MEA innovator, auto met mobiele faciliteit en MEA lab) and with our laboratory in the Netherlands. However, because of our experience with a widespread network of certified labs, we are able to operate from any desired location world-wide.
Currently, there is a gap of knowledge about the performance of ballast water treatment and management systems on the long term and under different circumstances. To improve this specific field of expertise, MEA-nl tests performance of these systems for ship owners, producers of management and treatment technologies and developers. We are currently working on the realization of an independent (stand-alone) operating monitoring system.
On behalf of a number of national and port authorities, MEA-nl carries out surveys on water discharges, including ballast water. We advise these authorities about the content and application of enforcement standards.
As an independent organization with specialized expertise, we also assist ship owners by providing advise and re-appraisal (counterchecks) when problems and/or disputes occur. For example, we can advise ship-owners how to prove compliance with the applicable regulations by proving appropriate performance of any ballast water or anti-fouling system.
